FAQ
WHAT CAN YOU SEND?
Pretty much any clothing! We do ask that its clean, freshly laundered and un-stained. If it’s meant to be in pairs, please send both. You’d be amazed how many single shoes we’ve sent off for recycling. We’re not brand snobs either but you have to remember that if it only cost £8 new in Primark it probably won’t bring in very much this time around. We do bundle up items of lower value, partly for our own sanity but mostly so we get some money back to you but we have to make an additional charge to our listing fees when we do that
We can’t take electrical items unless brand new and sealed.
If you’ve got jewellery or watches you’d like to sell we may be able to help but please ask ahead of time. The same can be said for household items, we may be able to help.
We take the sale of counterfeit goods very seriously. If we are unsure about the authenticity of an item we will ask you some questions but we do reserve the right to refuse to sell items. It’s our reputation at the end of the day.
WHAT DO WE DO NEXT?
Everything gets an initial sort through. This is our opportunity to assess whether it is saleable, to check for damage, staining or repairs needed. We do offer a basic repair service if the items are missing buttons etc (charges apply) and where possible we’d rather repair and allow the item chance to find a new home instead of going to our charity partners or recycling. Equally, it needs to be a cost effective solution for everyone involved. Lower value items will get mentally bundled to see if they can be made into a viable listing making you some money back. At this stage anything that hasn’t passed quality control is sorted for either donation to our charity partner or sent for responsible recycling.
After the initial sort all the saleable items are taken into the studio for photography and draft listing. We will send you over a list of prices we hope to achieve ranging from minimum to maximum. We will always try to get as much as possible for you (that’s why we work on commission) but the preloved fashion market is a fickle one and prices can change quickly. We aim to sell as much as possible, as soon as possible. We review pricing as we go and will offer discounts in order to clear as much of your clothing as possible. After about 4 months any items still in our store will be reduced further to allow us to cover our costs and any balance will still come to you. Beyond the 6 month mark any thing left will be passed onto our charity partners (we do make exceptions for really seasonal items like ski wear, it never sells well in July!)
Each month you’ll receive a payment from us around the 7th of the month for the previous calendar month. This is paid directly to your bank account. Simple eh!
HOW LONG UNTIL IT'S LISTED?
We are a fast growing company and try very hard to keep our time from collection to listing as short as possible. We are constantly trying to find better ways to do things, adding new team member and developing our software all the time. For an up to date lead time please email and one of the team can let you know.
HOW LONG DO THINGS TAKE TO SELL?
That’s a tough one, some pieces are really sought after and get snapped up the minute they land. Others might be slow burners, they might be out of season or there may be lots of others available. We always try to price your items competitively to reflect the demand and make as much as we can for you while still ensuring it actually sells. It’s a delicate balance and we think we generally get it right.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHO THINGS BELONG TO?
When we started this is was many sheets of paper and an excellent memory. We soon had more clothes than fingers and toes so we added some spreadsheets and databases. We currently use a few different pieces of software and are developing our own.
HOW LONG WILL YOU KEEP TRYING?
We will keep your items on sale for 6 months. After that they will be sent to our charity partners or for recycling. We can arrange for unsold items to be returned to you (charges apply)
WHY HAVEN'T MY CLOTHES SOLD?
We wish we could rehome everything that comes through the door but sometimes the right person just doesn’t find them. Classic pieces will normally find someone new to love them but if something was a definite moment in time, it may have had its day.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THINGS IF THEY DON'T SELL?
We work with a few charities who take items which we think will sell but simply may not have been economically viable to sell through our platform or simply need a different audience. Unfortunately most of the pieces which don’t sell need to have a new life iin a new form and are sent off to specialist recyclers who sort by fabric types and ensure we still do some good for the environment.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHAT CAN BE SOLD?
We‘ve been doing this for a while now and we have got a good idea of the standards that buyers expect and what people will pay for things. We wish we could give every piece a new home with someone who loves it but sometimes we just know it won’t sell. That might be because it's too tired and a little worn or because it just doesn’t command a good price on the second hand market. We won’t list items we don’t think will make you some money back after our costs, that wouldn’t be fair!
COUNTERFEIT GOODS
We have to be really careful here. There are a lot of pieces of counterfeit clothing in the UK and available abroad in holiday resorts all over the world. Some of them may have been gifted or just bought in good faith but unfortunately if you are asking us to sell it, we have to be confident in its provenance. We are pretty good at spotting genuine pieces but can’t be expert in all brands so sometimes we may ask for proof of purchase or we may need to send that piece to an authentication service (costs to be agreed in advance). Ultimately we reserve the right to refuse to sell something if we aren’t confident in its authenticity, it’s our reputation and livelihood at stake!
CAN YOU REPAIR ITEMS?
We have the ability to do basic repairs in house (although not always the time) and can replace buttons, pop a couple of stitches in a seam and if pushed repair zips. Anything more complicated and we have a reliable local seamstress working with us and we can price individually for repairs. If items are stained, ripped, missing buttons, tired, damaged we will pass them onto our recycling partners. As with anything we will only send things for repair if after the cost of repair and our fees you will still make some money, otherwise, it’s just not fair!
WHAT HAPPENS IF I SEND AN ITEM THAT NEEDS DRY CLEANING OR WASHING?
We ask that you don’t send us clothes that will need to be cleaned before we can sell them. If something sneaks through we have facilities at the studio to wash and dry items (charges apply) and we work with a great local dry cleaner for pieces requiring specialist cleaning (charges apply). If items are stained, ripped, missing buttons, tired, damaged we will pass them onto our recycling partners. As with anything we will only send things for cleaning if after the cost of cleaning and our fees you will still make some money, otherwise, it’s just not fair!
WHERE DO YOU OPERATE?
At the moment we cover Edinburgh and the Lothians. We do periodically make it along the M8 to Glasgow and the west, just ask and we can give you an idea of when we might be in the area next. We operate collections with our own team. We are working on ways to cover other areas and if you have a large amount to send to us or you can get a few friends together we may be able to come up with a solution. Send us an email, what’s the worst that can happen.
I'VE BOOKED A COLLECTION, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET READY?
We ask for a minimum of 20 items for a free collection. After that, the more the better! We drive a big van!
Please send your items in bags or full boxes. The collecting driver will have security seals and labels to identify your items.
